Tasks and stakeholders to decomission the UNITY active directory

It's getting time to talk about what needs to happen for a clean and successful decommissioning of the Unity domain,  I'd like to start by identifying the stakeholders and calling them together to discuss their transistion needs and priorities.

Here's the services so far identified

  • WolfPrint printing
  • Podcasting LDAP source
  • Storage for Site Licensed software
  • WINS service location
  • ComTech Call Manager
  • Ex-Microsys member servers
  • Others? (Please expand!)

Service: WolfPrint printing

Stakeholders: Wolftech admins, OIT-TSS-LSS

Proposed process:  We need to bring up a new Samba server, joined to the WolfTech domain, and running the latest codebase to resolve paper change issues and support PPD updates.  This new server, (call it \\print.ncsu.edu to match the website) would run in parallel with the existing \\wolfprint.ncsu.edu to allow testing and transition.

Issues: The scripts that client-32 machines use reference the unity domain explicitly, and are installed on each workstation.  How long we need to support the old system depends on how quickly the client-32 folks need to transition, either completely to WolfTech, or at least update their local workstation scripts.

Service: Podcasting LDAP source

Stakeholders: EGA

Proposed process:  Get UID/GUID populated for all WolfTech People accounts.  Assure permissions are set correctly to allow grouping.

Issues: Work is ongoing to get the permissions set correctly to embrace and support Apple technology. :-)

Service: Storage for Site Licensed software

Stakeholders: oit-sc-slm, WolfTech admins

Proposed process: We need to migrate the ISO data off of the unity cluster, and onto the Celerra in WolfTech.  While we're at it, let's work with Bill to determine if a simple security group model could add value to his software distribution process.

Service: WINS service location

Stakeholders: Client-32 workstations on campus, student laptops that desire roaming printing, oit-tss-ddt-cd, oit-tss-lss

Proposed process:  We need to bring up some dedicated WINS VMs on IP's that are unlikely to change, push them into the DHCP payloads wherever the old servers exist.

Issues:  Everybody hates WINS

Service: ComTech Call Manager

Stakeholders: (help here?)

Proprosed process: (help here?)

Issues: (help here?)

Service: Ex-Microsys member servers

Stakeholders: oit-iso-shs

Proposed process:  Configure appropriate GPOs in Wolftech, migrate each server independantly until all are done.
