Meeting with TSS/SNC regarding desktop issues
I've been attending a biweekly meeting called by Jason M. in TSS-SC for a while now, but haven't been posting my notes. Sorry 'bout that. :-)
The membership at these meetings is Ed L (TSS), Tom F (TSS), Tim G. (Security & Complience), Danny D (TSS), Dan Evans (TSS) and Jason M. (TSS). It was originally conviened to discuss the use of "cached credentials" on administrative desktops. It's since transmongrafied into a general discussion of desktop issues, and thus something to be reported to our ISO team as a whole.
We think OIT desktop planning is effectively stalled. David L. is representing OIT in the SOP workstation purchasing team. We think Danny D. is representing OIT in the SOP desktop team, headed by CNR.
In the meantime, we're unclear as to exactly how many Desktop teams OIT is running internally (we know David L., Susan, Danny and Debbie C, Harry N. and John B met recently to discuss this, but nobody present knew the results of that meeting), and what the mission of this meeting should become.
We did decide to keep meeting bi-weekly, as it was seen as valuable for the technical staff in TSS and ISO to talk, and regardless of mission our collaboration was valuable.
Tim indicated the desire to have a well defined plan for moving admin data from Novell hosting to SMB/CIFS. There is a lot of sensitive data in the existing Novell environment, which provides opportunities to secure and improve our processes during a move.
We spend the bulk of the meeting discussion how one could migrate an installed Novell base. Unsurprisingly, the same kinds of plans we'd floated back in the day to migrate the academic labs still seem viable.
In the short term, it was suggested that we enable the Windows networking stack on administrative workstations (it's currently disabled). This would allow exploration of "the alien-human hybrid" of some services delivered via Novell and some via Active Directory in an administrative context. We also need to tweak the networking configurations for the admin workstations to use common WINS and such. No concreate plans were formed.
