Reboot a server with an HP ILO
Integrated Lights Out, aka ILO, is a browser based out of band management tool for server administrators. HP ILO is accessible from the 172.17.11.x network, located behind the checkpoint firewall. Use a browser in Citrix to access if needed. The look of the ILO may vary some due to versioning, but the methods are the same.
Naming Convention:
The ILOcards are named in DNS after the servers which they control. The convention is servername-nm.oit.ncsu.edu. As an example, host acsad2,acsad.ncsu.edu has it's DRAC named acsad2-nm.oit.ncsu.edu .
Most former ETSS HP machines use the server name plus < -ilo > to resolve the IP address. For example, ILO for a server named SHS1 would have a DNS name of SHS1-ilo and a web address of http://SHS1-ilo. All ILO connections will automatically move to port 443 for secure communication.
Authentication:
Use your
ACSAD user ID and password
How To:
There are 2 tabs of interest for reboots.
The first is via the Remote Console tab. If the server is still functioning in some fashion and console access is desired, using the Remote Console and warm rebooting is preferable to a hard reboot. Under the Remote Console tab is a selection named Remote Console.

Selecting this will invoke a second window, bringing up the server console via a Java applet. Selecting the checkbox for High Performance Mouse usually eliminates any dual or sluggish mouse actions. Select the Ctrl-Alt-Del button and log on to the console.
Reboot from the console in a normal fashion. Unlike a Terminal Services session, ontact will not be lost & the shutdown, POST and startup activities are visible. To log off and close out, reverse the process.
Log off from the console, and select Close in the window. Logout of ILO once back to the original window. Not logging out properly hangs the ILO system and can prevent users from accessing the server’s ILO.
The second method is via the Power Management/Virtual Devices tab. The name will vary based on version. If console access is not functioning, this is the next best alternative. Under this tab, there is a selection to the left named either Server Power or Virtual Power. From there, 4 options are available: Momentary Press, Press & Hold, Cold Boot and Reset, with a status of the server, either On or Off.

To power down a malfunctioning server, select Press & Hold and then confirm your selection when queried. The status of the server should change
to Off in a few seconds. Wait several seconds for the server to quiesce, and thenselect Momentary Press. Confirm the query & the server will boot. Access is available once the system is up.
Note:
Remote console requires an ILO license. Some servers may not have the license. On those servers, staff can still use Power Management to restart a server, but not remote console.
