What GP settings mean - Local Policy settings

Some settings are not explained in the Microsoft spreadsheets. However, there is an explanation of many of them, includng the security settings, here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785710(WS.10).aspx

See particularly the entries under "local policy".

What GPO settings mean, GP blog

Wonder what all those GPO settings mean? Microsoft has provided some guidance. They have produced spreadsheets that identify all of the settings for the .adms included with Win2k3, plus addendums for Win2k8 and Win2k8R2. They include short text explaining what the settings do.

For convenience, I've attached them. They came from:

Mac Issues in WolfTech, part 2

I talked with Joey Jenkins (Design) about the issue that they had when the cross-realm trust to EOS.NCSU.EDU was enabled in WolfTech. Basically, authentication to their CIFS shares broke. They were running samba on Mac OS X.

FERPA & AD

I asked Brian Arkills from the University of Washingon for his ppt slides from the windows-hied presentation he gave that covered FERPA.

ferpaAndAD- gives an overview of FERPA and has some specific discussion of AD

HiEdConf2007FillInTopics-Barkills - the last topic on Group Invisibility is what many folks in the hied world are doing to deal with FERPA in Active Directory.

FERPA presentation

Brian Askills from the University of Washington has done a good presentation on FERPA which is available online at:

http://windows-hied.org/wiki/index.php5?title=FERPA_and_Active_Directory

It's 45 minutes.

The first 30 minutes are all about FERPA. It provides a good intro to the subject, with some interesting tid-bits. The last 15 minutes are FERPA & Active Directory. It is a little Exchange-heavy.

I think, being a Microsoft LiveMeeting ActiveX kind of thingie, it may require Internet Explorer. Opera don't work.

Staff Senate - Pres. Erskine Bowles comments - 20080304

Erskine Bowles speaks to NCSU Staff Senate

- Thank you for your service, the university wouldn't run without you
- At 63 years old, this is the toughest economic climate he has seen
- If the General Assembly doesn't continue to fund us as in the past, we won't continue to turn out the highly educated workforce that drives the economy of NC, grave concern
- Last year, we were asked to provide budgets for 3/5/7% cuts. 75% of our costs are people. Cut other 25% by 7% and it's a 28% cut in non-people resources.

AITD Meeting 20081104

Change Advisory Board - 20881104

I attended the CAB today. The meeting was very brief as several members were absent. There were no changes to report on, except that I provided the update that we are working to test moving administrative Novell file and print servers from the CheckPoint to the Cisco firewall. The original date was 11/14; I noted that the date depends on successful completion of testing. Gary Li asked that Gene coordinate a date/time with Cheryl Cleveland as there is a major financials update scheduled a few hours after the original date for this change.
